In original pale blue, stiff cloth dust; a few small stains, each with small hole (one at spine tail, one at edge fold). Top edge gilt. Handsome owner bookplate on decorative front endpaper of each volume and inked signature on fly leaf. Illustrated with a multitude of photogravure illustrations of art, architecture, people and place all protected with captioned tissue guards. Text within ornamental frames printed in red and grey. Irving's romantic rendition of Ferdinand and Isabella's siege of the kingdom of Granada presenting "a lively picture of the war...characteristic of the times, so much of the material having been drawn from contemporary historians...
