Small 4to. in green cloth backed with Japan vellum with gilt lettering on spine and illustrated gilt armorial device on front cover. With handsome engraved plates and text illustrations including portraits, plans, facsimiles, &c. &c. Attractive illustrated bookplate of former owner (collector Lily Antrobus) on front paste-down. Tips a little rubbed, front inner hinge cracking, and occasional light foxing to front and back matter. Chawton was the estate of Jane Austen's brother and now houses a library of women's writing in English from 1600-1830. The history of a house (and surrounds) and the people who lived there, including the role it played in Jane Austen's life during her most prolific writing period. An attractive book and often hard to come by.
