SCOTT, Walter MARMION; A TALE OF FLODDEN FIELD

Small 8vo. (7-1/2 x 6 inches) in original full leather ornately decorated with stamped gilt rose and thistle frame, titles, shields and lances; with interior gilt-rolled pattern. All edges gilt. Title page printed in red and black with arched photograph of Scott's Monument at Edinburgh. With14 additional photographs by Thomas Annan (mounted on heavy paper with tissue guards) of the castles, abbeys, palaces, &c that figured in Scott's epic poem of the climactic battle between King James IV of Scotland and English troops in 1513. This battle resulted in the King's death and heavy losses among the Scots. Thomas Annan (1829-1887) is noted primarily for his Scottish architectural studies and urban street scenes of Glasgow. A nice copy with a contemporary gift inscription on the front free endpaper. Covers worn at hinges and edges and inner joints cracked. But still an attractive copy with early albumen photos by Thomas Annan.

1st of this edition. Small quarto; 8 x 6-1/2 inches in purple textured cloth with ornate gilt decoration and titles on front cover and spine; beveled edges. All edges gilt. Publisher's binding with the "Lady," a stag, a swan, a horse, arrows, a cross, rules, vines, grapes, wheat...(whew) & c. and signed with the initials "JL," (John Leighton). Spine faded, corners rubbed and a few spots on the covers. With bookplate of John Bodman Carrington and contemporary gift note to John tipped in on front free endpaper. Booksellers ticket for H. Scott, Carlisle on front endpaper. Illustrated by 13 mounted albumen photos of Scottish landscapes by T. Ogle, plus frontis by George Washington Wilson. Gernsheim, 196.
