A near perfect copy of this limited edition of 150 copies of which this is No. yy. Small 4to. (approx. 10 x 7-1/2 inches) in green cloth stamped in blind and gilt. Top edge gilt, others uncut. Errata slip tipped in. Numerous illustration plates of portraits, facsimiles and half-tones from photos. Typed letter laid in with address of Holly Lodge (the address of George Eliot) addressed to “My dear Chapman” (possibly John Chapman of publishers Chapman and Hall with whom George Eliot has worked in the past?) and typed signature of G. H. Lewes (1817-1878) insisting that Mrs. Lewes is not the author of “Adam Bede.” [The author’s true identity is revealed in 1859.]
