New-York Harper & Brothers 1836 Hardcover
1st American Edition. Two volumes bound as one in full old leather with gilt lettering on spine and marbled edges. Marbled endpapers and small inked name on front blank. Engraved portrait of More and extra-illustrated title page dated 1835. Text printed in double columns. Hannah More (1745-1833) was a British author, poet, dramatist and philanthropist. In the 1770's & 80's More lived in London and was actively involved with the intellectual and literary elite and a member of the Bluestocking Group. In 1785 she moved to Somerset and in the following decades wrote many moral and ethical books and tracts, some of which embraced anti-revolutionary thought, anti-slavery, anti-French, and women's education. In later life she set up schools for the poor focusing upon reading and the Bible. Covers worn with splitting at head of spine; light occasional foxing. ; AL
