1st edition, 2nd state title page. Octavo in original publisher's binding with decorative pictorial decoration by Margaret Armstrong stamped in red, white, gilt and black on front cover with ornate gilt decoration and lettering on spine. Top edge gilt. Illustrated with half-tone photo plates by the Hampton Institute Camera Club. BAL 937. A faint discoloration at fore-edge of front cover, otherwise a near fine copy with bright gilt and colors with protective acetate covering. Paul Dunbar's (1872 - 1906) second published book of poetry in the African-American dialect.

8vo. in original publisher's red paisley cloth with paper label with illustration from photo, lettering and decoration pasted on front cover, and decorated paper title label on spine. Illustrated plates from photos by Leigh Richmond Miner with text and cover "decorations" by John Rae. Top edge gilt. 1st of this edition with photographic illustrations to Dunbar's poetry rendered in African-American dialect. Dunbar, (1872-1906), was considered the foremost African-American writer of his time and his poetry was popular within both the white and black communities. Contemporary "tribute to the memory of the late Paul Laurence Dunbar" from "The Bookman" laid in. An excellent copy. Blanck 4956.

1st edition. 8vo in original green cloth with pictorial decoration on front cover and spine of daffodils with lettering in gilt. Spine slightly darkened, but front cover bright. Slight edge rubbing. Top edge gilt. Small initial stamp at top of front paste-down. Photos by Leigh Richmond Miner (1864-1935) of Hampton Institute, noted for his fine photographic documentation of black life on St. Helena's Island. Decorations by Margaret Armstrong, noted book design artist. Printed on heavy paper with decorative borders; text in black dialect. A very nice copy.

8vo in original publisher's binding designed by Alice Morse. Covers in original green cloth with green and red trumpet vine decoration and gilt lettering. Top edge gilt. Dunbar's first book Illustrated from photos by the Hampton Institute Camera Club. The son of slaves, Paul Laurence Dunbar, an African-American poet popular with both black and white readers, often wrote his poetry in dialect. The photographs, taken by faculty and staff of the Hampton Institute, an educational facility run for black and native-American students, were staged for the literal and emotional accompaniment of the poems and they offer insight into perceptions of the post slavery African-American community. Spine a little darkened and a few small marks on the covers, but otherwise a very good copy. BAL 4927.
