1 KNICKERBOCKER, Diedrich. [Pseud. of Washington Irving] A HISTORY OF NEW YORK FROM THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD TO THE END OF THE DUTCH DYNASTY
New York George P. Putnam 1850 Hardcover
8vo in original decorative publisher's binding with ornate gilt decoration and lettering on green buckram covers and spine. All edges gilt. Contemporary penciled name of former owner on endpapers. Charming illustrations by Felix O. C. Darley. With fold-out engraving of "Peter Stuyvesants Army entering New Amsterdam from a drawing by William Hath of London and presented by him to the author." The piece is foxed and chipped and with numerous closed tears, but complete. Rear blank and free endpaper with sections torn away, and free endpaper with contemporary inked list of indexed comments on the text. Covers stained and worn with front inner hinge crudely strengthened. Washington Irving's (1783-1859) first published book is a satiric rendering of New York's early social and political history. The author's pseudonym, Knickerbocker, has generally come to be a nickname for NYC residents, or New York in general. A reading copy of an entertaining and influential book.
