(Dobbs Ferry, NY) Morgan & Morgan 1973 Hardcover
Small 4to. (approx. 10-1/2 x 9 inches) burgundy boards with original dustwrapper illustrated from photographs. Unclipped but with M&M price sticker over old price. First trade edition. A monograph of James Van Der Zee (1886-1983) an African-American photographer in the heart of the Harlem Renaissance...a portraitist and visual biographer of the middle-class and notables of African-American New York life, primarily in Harlem. He presented idealized views utilizing costumes, props and settings; retouching and painting directly on the print. Along with portraits, Van Der Zee documented the social life of Harlem...rallies, parades, fraternal organizations, street scenes, church groups, funerals and family groups. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper with small closed tear at top of spine, in a protective mylar covering.
