(approx. 10 x 6-1/2 inches) in brown cloth stamped in blind and gilt. Covers a bit worn and faded with 2-1/2 inch split at base of spine and tip missing from rear endpaper. "This Third Edition is prepared in order to give WOMAN her true Saxon name; also, to add a Synopsis for "Woman's Record" from 1855 to 1868,--thus making the work complete." The author notes "To show what she [Woman] has done, I have gathered from the records of the world the names and histories of all distinguished women, so that an exact estimate of the capabilities of the sex might be formed by noting what individuals have accomplished through obstacles and discouragements of every kind." Illustrated by two hundred and thirty wood engraved portraits by Cossing and Barritt. An encyclopedic compilation, from a Victorian perspective, of the lives of women who have distinguished themselves through thought, pen, or action ranging from the Biblical to the "Modern" Eras.
