1 BRERETON, Austin THE LITERARY HISTORY OF THE ADELPHI AND ITS NEIGHBOURHOOD
Adelphi, W. C. Anthony Treherne & Co. 1907 Hardcover
1st edition. 8vo. in green cloth stamped in gilt on front cover and spine.Top edge gilt. Large illustrated bookplate of Thomas J. Barratt, signed "1891, HSM" on front paste-down. The bookplate artist is Henry Stacy Marks (1821-1898). Thomas J. Barratt (1841-1914) was the chairman of the soap manufacturer A&F Pears, and revolutionized the concept of brand marketing using art as the centerpiece of the Pears Soap advertising. Illustrated with an engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, and numerous b&w illustration plates. The Adelphi Buildings were a block of neoclassical terrace houses near the Thames River in the parish of St Martin in the Fields, built by the Adam brothers 1768-72. These homes had a rich literary history with David Garrick, Hannah Moore, Charles Dickens, Richard D'Oyly Carte, J. M. Barrie, John Galsworthy, George Bernard Shaw, Thomas Hardy &c. &c. passing through. The majority of the block of buildings were demolished in the 1930's, leaving only one building in Robert Street. A little puckering along the spine and light rubbing at the tips and spine, otherwise a very nice copy of the rich history of this London neighborhood.
