12mo. (approx. 7-1/4 x 5 inches); 572pp with 2pp of publisher’s ads at rear. In brick-red cloth, stamped with publishers device and decorative frames in blind on front cover and gilt on spine. Light blue endpapers. Two pages preceding the title have been removed, with remnants in the gutter. Spine a little darkened and covers rubbed, but binding tight. Occasional spotting in margins. An early reprint.

1st American Edition. Title page with old repair. Small quarto (9-1/4 x 5-3/4 inches); 206 pp. in textured black cloth boards with leather spine and tips. Spine with 5 raised bands and gilt title and rules and red speckled edges. Yellow endpapers with contemporary owner’s signature on front free endpaper. Printed in double columns. Bound without ads. Covers with some rubbing along joints and tips. Published in the “Library of Select Novels” series simultaneously with the trade full cloth edition. A very good copy.

1st American Edition. Approx. (7-3/8 x 4-7/8 inches); 572 pages, in brown publisher’s cloth stamped in blind with ruled borders and geometric designs with publisher’s emblem in center of covers. Yellow endpapers. Small old bookseller’s ticket on front paste-down; endpapers darkened at center and abraided at top right. Page 150 and 167 chapter headings mislabeled. With 4 pages publisher’s advertisements at rear. Occasional light foxing to front and back matter. Covers with fading and wear to extremities. Charlotte Brontë’s 2nd novel. Harper’s scarce trade edition. The London 3-volume edition was issued the year before.

Publisher’s list of Brontë titles preceding title page. Six pages publisher’s advts. at rear. Gilt dulled, covers with small faded spot on front cover; ends of spine a little worn and rear blank torn out with remnants at gutter. Charlotte Bronte first novel, and the last to be published...posthumously. A good, tight copy of this US 1st edition.
