1 HERON-ALLEN, ED[ward] VIOLIN-MAKING, AS IT WAS AND IS:...ON THE SCIENCE AND ART OF VIOLIN-MAKING FOR THE USE OF VIOLIN MAKERS AND PLAYERS...
London Ward, Lock, & Co. 1885 Hardcover
Octavo in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt titles on front cover and spine. Charming gilt illustration by Rosamund B. Horsley of a mouse bowing a violin on the front cover. Includes author's Preface, chapters on the history of the violin and violinists, the bow, the elements of the physical violin, strings, repairs, decoration, fittings...with Appendices on Varnishing the Violin, Preservation of the Instrument, Bibliography, Catalogue of Violin Schools and Instruction Books; and Index. Publisher's Catalogue at rear. This is the Second edition, much of the material first being issued in serial form in "Amature Work Illustrated", 1882-3-4. This "Second" edition incorporates numerous corrections and changes suggested by readers and friends. Illustrated with three woodburytypes (photos), one of the author and two of King Charles IX's violin; also with a whimsical sketch by Randolph Caldecott, and an autotype of an original pencil sketch that was used for the cover. There are three full-size, fold-out diagrams and nearly two hundred woodcut text illustrations. Inscription and owner's signature on front blank, and owner's stamp and penciled notes on verso of the frontis portrait. Rear hinge cracked, but not open; tips rubbed. Overall a very nice copy of this handsome and instructive book.
