1st NY trade edition. Quarto in original cream buckram with gilt lettering and ornate blind decoration of bells. Spine and edges darkened. Decorative endpapers with bell pattern. Old gift inscription on half-title. Beautifully illustrated by Edmund Dulac with 28 full-color plates with captioned tissue guards [as listed], and ten headpieces printed in black. With many of Poe's best poems including "Annabel Lee," "The Raven," "The Conqueror Worm," and "Tamerlane." A nice copy of this lovely book.

Approx. 18.5 x 12 cm; viii, 328 pages. Contains the first printing of "The Pit and the Pendulum" by Edgar Allan Poe, page 133. In full tan leather with ornate gilt floral decoration on covers and gilt lettering and decoration on the spine; all edges gilt. Yellow endpapers; old sticker on title page. Illustrated with engraved frontispiece, extra-illustrated title page and 7 plates, one of which is detached and laid in. An early Victorian gift book featuring American authors (many women) and American artists. Covers rubbed, but gilt bright and joints and hinges strong; foxed throughout as is common with this title. Rather scarce.

Volume 1 & 2, 1845, bound together as issued. Approx. 22.5 x 14 cm; 378 pages. In maroon ribbed cloth stamped with decorative blind frames and gilt medallion in the center of the front and back covers. Spine with gilt decoration and lettering. Spine faded with small chip in center and rubbed ends with small split in cloth at front joint. The first two volumes of this publication. Includes Poe's "The Raven" issued in the same year as its original publication, on the last pages (pp376-78). Illustrated with 7 engraved plates and 7 hand-colored botanical lithographs with tissue guards. Covers a bit rubbed and corners "bumped" with light to moderate foxing throughout and dampstain at the top margin of some pages.But still a nice, solid copy of this early printing of Poe's most famous writing. Includes articles on Female Education, Death, Poetry, Fiction, Christian Topics, Travels, the Cultivation of the Mind, &c. &c.
